-“Now, what mortal imagination could conceive it?”- pg. 188
A.) All of the people in the town are gathered in the town square and in the townmarket for the procession of the former governor. Hester is standing in the crowd with Pearl when an elderly woman whispered that privately to Hester. She is informing Hester, that she knows about the meeting in the forest between Hester and Dimmesdale.
B.) I think this passage is important because it semi-confirms that Hester and Dimmesdale’s affair is known by just them too, and it also shows that Hester continues to keep on lying about their affair.

-“If thou callest me that ill name, I shall tell him of thee; and he will chase thy ship with a tempest!” pg 189
A.) This is the quote that Pearl says after Mistress Hibbins says that she knows about Hester and Dimmesdales affair. She tells it to Mistress Hibbins at the same time Mistress Hibbins told her about the knowledge of Hester, Pearls mother, and Dimmesdales affair. After telling Hibbins this, Pearl then finds her way through the crowd back to her mother.
B.) This quote to me illustrates that Pearl is indeed a very troubled child. I think Pearl is really strange, and this quote just backs it all up. On the other hand, one might say that this quote shows a normal side of pearl. However, I don’t think any normal child would tell a woman, she is going to go tell the person who was bashed, what the person said about them and tell them to go whip them.

-“Thus, there had come to the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale—as to most men, in their…could hereafter be.” Pg 190
A.) This passage is talking about right before Dimmesdale is going to give his last sermon. It describes his feelings, and the details surrounding this. At this point, the whole town has emerged and everyone is focused intently on Dimmesdale.
B.) This is important because this is the last time that Dimmesdale will be seen giving a sermon in this town. It also shows that Hester and Pearl are there and they are prepared to listen to him intently as is the rest of the town.
Tag 34
-“Thy power is now what it was! With God’s help, I shall escape thee now!” pg 196
A.) This is when everything is being revealed at Dimmesdale sermon, and everyone seems to be there. Chillingsworth is there and he is not helping the mayhem, infact he is what started it. He is trying to take Pearl, and tell everyone what happened with Hester and Dimmesdale.
B.) This is important because Chillingsworth is really showing his evil side. It shows everyone what he went after, and what his true motivations are. It also shows that Dimmesdale is finally not scared anymore of letting everyone know, because in front of all those people he still cries out for Hester and Pearl.
Tag 35
-“May God forgive thee!” pg. 198
A.) This is what Dimmesdale tells the crowd that is around him, and listening to his sermon. What he means by this is that they need to be forgiving towards one another because everyone sins, and no one can be put out like Hester was because of a sin.
B.) I think this is significant because it shows that Dimmesdale is starting to preach a new message to the town, and that message is that of forgiveness. The town really needed to here that forgiveness was possible, because they’re were so many people who would not grant it.

-The Scarlet Letter- pg 201
A.) Finally we see what the Scarlet Letter has come to represent in all. That is, a vast multitude of things. First it represented the fact that Hester was an adulterer. Next it represented the angles that were in the sky, after the governors death. Finally it represented “able” and that is what Hester was.
B.) The Scarlet A is a very important symbol, and I think it has to be recognized. Without it, the book wouldn’t be tied together. It was this that indeed clarified the majority of the book and made it all make sense.
Tag #31
A. In this chapter Pearl and Hester are in the marketplace and Dimmesdale is walking through with armored solders. People can see that Dimmesdale has changed very much and even Pearl says she wants to give that man a kiss.
B.I think Dimmesdale has got his sin off his chest. This is why he changed very much and this would be bad for Hester because they are about to leave for Europe.
Tag #32
A. Hester is now on the foot of the scaffold listening to Dimmesdale sermon and then realizes that everyone around her is staring at her red A.
B. I think that Dimmesdale let the cat out of the bag and told everyone that he had a relationship with Hester.
Tag #33
A. Dimmesdale is done his sermon and people around the market place are saying that is was the best he has ever done. This show you that he is about to do something very brave.
B.I think this is very odd because Dimmesdale is feeling bad and then this day he feels all better and gives a great sermon.
Tag #34
A. Dimmesdale is done and sees Hester and gets on the scaffold with her and Pearl. Dimmesdale then proclaims to the world that he has committed adultery with Hester and he is the biggest sinner and DIES.
B. This is crazy Dimmesdale dies rite after he says to the town that he committed adultery and doesn’t have to pay any consequence from the town. This is showing that Dimmesdale is a big coward.
Tag #35
A. The townspeople can’t decide what caused Dimmesdale death and Chilingsworth dies a year later leaving everything to Pearl.
B. The people in the town are totally shocked and don’t know what happened on the scaffold all the know is that Dimmesdale is dead and so is Chilingsworth a year after.
Tag #36
A. Pearl and Hester ran away and come back several years later. Hester starts helping the poor again and she eventually dies and she is buried with the A on her tombstone.
B.I think this is ridiculous to put the A on her tombstone. This is a puritan utopia and they should forgive and forget but they didn’t all away to her death.
Chap 22
A. dimsdale is mad that chillingworth is on the ship with him and hester. also the rich people gathered in the market place
B.I would be mad too if my lovers husband ran away with my mistress and i, i would be furious and i think it would be pretty aquward
A Hester watches dimsdale give a sermon and for some indecribable reason she feels a sudden connection to him like they are one.
B. when you get that feeling, that sertian thing in the pit of your heart, a connection that is love.
CH 23
A. now dimsdale had just finished his sermon and fell very ill and went to the scaffold. there he admited he wasnt what he seemed to be, he seemed to be a saint but he was a mere siner.
B. I respect dimsdale for doing that, finaly stepping down from the pedistol and admiting he is just like everyone else.
A. At this piont Dimsdale is still on the saffold and admiting his sin the he says farewell and dies right there.
B. Atleast he didnt die with a heavy heart, he might have died a really sad way but he died with a clean repented heart.
Ch 24
A. After dimsdale dies everyhting dies down and some people think they died.
B. there really want much to talk about here so i am just going to babel, nothing is going on i think but this book is confusing so maybe im missing somthing
A. I think hester never took the A off because it kept that constant reminder of the sin she had commited and of dimsdale
B. This is the last tag WOO HOO
I can understand always wanting to be emined of her sin so she wont do it again, that makes sense
