Chapter 20
1. “I am not the man for whom you take me! I left him yonder in the forest.”
A. In four days Hester, Pearl and Dimmesdale are planed to go to Europe because it is a better place for all of them. After they were at the harbor Dimmesdale wants to tell everyone in town “I am not the man for whom you take me! I left him yonder in the forest.” but something stops him.
B.I think this statement is exactly who Dimmesdale really is. He is hidden behind the self image of a pastor but really he is a sinner.
2. A Changed Dimmesdale
A. Dimmesdale has changed the way he shows him self in front of the towns people. For an example he ignores a woman who he has just came to the church because he fears that he will put a bad seed in her heart and he nearly teaches young children bad words.
B.I think this is all the bad stuff that was held up in him while he was hiding the real Dimmesdale. He knows that he has done wrong and is know realizing that he can’t teach the word of God with all the bad stuff inside him.
Chapter 21
1. A New Governor
A.This chapter starts up with the townspeople in the market place celebrating because they have a new governor. This is the first time the people are meeting for something good rather than them insulting Hester on the scaffold.
B.I think this is a good thing for the town because they can now see how life was before they over reacted with Hester. But it is sad for Hester because she sees what the town would be if she never had a relationship with Dimmesdale.
2. Chillingsworth Voyage
A. One of the sailors told Hester that Chilingsworth is going to join them because he is going to be the new doctor on the ship and is a member of their party. When Hester looks at Chilingsworth he just smirks.
B.I think this is a smart move for Chilingsworth because he still wants revenge and he is going to get it. This is just going to make Hester’s life harder because now everyone is going to know in Europe when Chilingsworth tells everyone.
