tag #17 - second scaffold - page 117-118
A. Dimmesdale is wandering around the world, and he comes upon the scaffold, where he himself cried out against Hester, demanding her to give up the name of the man she had slept with. He starts to feel a little crazy, and imagines a scarlet letter upon his own breast, and sees everyone pointing at him,
Tag #1+5 "public veneration" - page 114
A. Dimmesdale is having problems with his conscience from the sin he is committing He wants to tell the town what he has done but he doesn’t know what they will think of him.
B. I think this is his fault he should have thought of his consequences before he committed this sin. He also should tell the town he committed the sin because it would make alot of people’s life easier.
Tag #1+6 "self-punishment" - page 115
A. Dimmesdale is trying to show God that he is sorry for his sin so he is hitting himself with a whip.
B. This dude is insane he should tell the town what he has done and ask God for forgiveness.
Tag #1+7 second scaffold - page 117-118
A. Dimmesdale reenacts the day that Hester is on the scaffold but he is on it not Hester. He also imagines the scarlet letter on his garments like Hester and how it would affect his life.
B. This shows that Dimmesdale is really affected by the adultery. He even has images of him on the scaffold being just like Hester he is going insane.
Tag #1+8 red “A” in the sky – pg.155 - 156
A. Pearl, Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chilingsworth are all together and a comet makes a red A in the sky and Dimmesdale thinks it is Pearl that made it through witchcraft.
B. This is totally ridiculous how a little girl can control the star falling. This shows that Dimmesdale is losing his mind and needs to get this sin off of his chest.
Tag 15- "Public Veneration" Pg 114
A. Dimsdale is going through a crisis within his own mind, he feels guilty for what he did with hester. He feels bad because everyone in the town looks to him for spiritual guidance and leadership, and he feels he cant be the man people look to to see God anymore
B. I can see where he is coming from, I want to be a pastor when i get out of college, and I would feel the same way if i ever did som thing like that.
Tag 16 "Self Punishment" Pg 115
A. Dimsdale is still feeling really guilty because he sees pearl and Hester going through everything he should be going through with them. it is tearing at him having to watch this.
B. if I were him, I would clear my consience and just come out with the truth, and if all of these people really are "Christians" they should still love him.
Tag 17 "second scaffold" Pg 118
A. So what is happening is Dimsdale is standing in early morning at the scaffold were Hester once stood and is thinking i think he is thinking about confessing. Chillingworth also sees him
B. I can Imagine how he must be feling he must feel so horrible about hester and pearl having to go through this by themselves and I could understand why he wants to confess.
Tag 18 "Red A in the sky"
A. So Dimsdale, Hester and pearl are all standing on the scaffold one day and Pearl makes a red A appear in the sky supposedly using Witchcraft or thats how it seemed
B. I am Confused if this is a vision or reality
Chapter 11
The Interior of a Heart
Tag 15 - "public veneration" -
A. In this part of the novel we see that the narratior is singling Dimmesdale out because of a personal problem which also adds to the fact that people seem to think he was sent from Heaven and they should look to him for words.
B. I think this is sad because this shows yet another one of the negative effects of this, Purinistic soceity, and that is that it can also be harmful to the health and well being of someone.
Tag 16 -"self punishment"
A. This could be considered the rising action of the novel right here. It takes places when Dimmesdale really wants to confess his sin, but he seems inable to gather up the strength to do so.
B. I hope Dimmesdale confesses soon, because as previously mention we can see that this is taking a major toll on his health and sometimes it is good just to let something like this out.
Chapter 12
The Ministers Vigil
Tag 17 - "second scaffold"
A. This takes place after Governor Winthrop has passed away, and Hester, Pearl and the like are being brought to the scaffold. Also, it is still the continuation of Dimmesdale really wanting to confess his sin.
B. I dont know if I am really glad that the governor died, although Im glad for a change in pace, I just still have pity on this whole society.
Tag 18 -Red “A” in the Sky
A. The people of Boston see an "A" in the sky, and yet they are to ignorant to realize what it means. They all believe it means angels, but it really stands for what the "A" has meant all along.
B. I think people should finally realize how stupid they are being, and that they being Christians should know that no one is perfect except for Jesus, and so they shouldnt act the way they do when something goes ary.
