5 Comments:
1.) Puritan Utopia – pg. 47
a.) Author/Facts
• Village of Boston, Mass.
• 1642
• Written by Nathaniel Hawthorne
• Hester has a three month old child who has been with her in jail.
• The village is supposed to be a utopia
• b.) Reader/Response The citizens of Boston were lost in what they believed. They had no idea what a Utopia was, because they would have understood there was no need for a prison.
2.) “A people amongst whom religion and law were identical”
a.)Author/Facts
The only basic fact in this section is that quote itself, and what it means.
b.) Reader/Response
I believe that the quote meant that the citizens were so wrapped up in religious law, that the interpreted it word for word and would not look to anything else as their form of law.
3.) “she will not speak”
a.) Author/Facts This was the point in the novel in which the prisonee, Hester Pryne, would not reveal to the judges who she had an affair with.
b.) Reader/Response
I think this was a very important because it shows that she dared to go against the judges and what they felt was there was of a puritan utopia.
TAG 1:
1. Puritan Utopia (41)
A. Author and Facts
Boston MA 1642
Written by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Great grandson of a judge at the Salem witch trials
Hawthorne added the W so no one would associate him with his great grandfather
The Puritan society was not a perfect utopia in fact
If it was a utopia they wouldn’t need a prison
B. Readers Response
Socialistic society just doesn’t work we have found that to be true through out history. Jamestown doomsday cult tried the whole utopia thing and look what happened they all died. People are not perfect they will make mistakes so it makes no sense, nothing created by man could ever be 100% perfect.
TAG 2:
2.“ A people amongst whom religion and law were identical.”
A. Facts
Their Governing laws were the same as their church laws.
B. Readers Response
How can a Government survive in a case like this? It cant. If some on even commits the slightest sin such as lying to your wife and telling her she looks skinny as a twig when she weighs 500 pounds, you go to jail for it? Not right
TAG 3:
3. “She will not speak”
A. Facts
Hester will not give up who she had an affair with to the court.
They wanted the mans name so they could charge him with adultery too.
B. Readers Response
In my opinion I think she was being very brave because not giving up the name of the man would probably cause more harm to her. But she loved him and wanted to keep his good name.
Tag #1 Puritan Utopia

Where? Outside of a jail house.
B) Utopia is a hard thing to ask for in a society of human beings and is basically not possible. But if the town was asking for Utopia then why would they build a jail house for criminals?
Tag #2 The Market Place
"A people amongst whom religion and law were identical"
A) The town people took there religion very serious and turned it into there laws.
B) Nathaniel Hawthorne is telling us that this town takes there religion very serious and turns it into there laws and this is no way to govern a society.
Tag #3 The Recognition
"she will not speak"
A) Hester is on the podium in front of a crowd of people and is being asked who her partner in committing adultery was and she does answer.
B) This is a brave move of Hester because she does not answer and could be killed for her actions. But she does not rat out on him she must really love the guy she did it with.
