The Crucible - Act Three Reading Notes

Please answer the following in your posts for Act Three of The Crucible:
A. Observation - Write who, what, where, when, why, and how for the historical context of each reading. (Remember, this should be your longest section.)
B. Interpretation - Write down your questions in regard to what the text means. You do not need to immediately find the answers to every question, but at least make note of them.
C. Application - You must have a personal opinion such as how the selected passages or question makes you feel, how it has meaning or lacks meaning, or why it is difficult to accept, etc. Optional !!!D. Lists - Make a couple of lists in an attempt to clarify observations, characters, interpretations, and applications. Many times lists can alleviate confusion and further understanding.

Please remember that this post is worth 50 points and is due by 8:00a.m. on Wednesday morning, 9/27/06!

This act, act 3, takes place in the court during Elizibeth Proctor's trial. the charactar list is Elizibeth, John, Giles Corey, Mary Warren, Danforth. Pariss and Rev. Hale. Pariss is convinced that John is trying to overthrow the court, and speek on his wive's behalf. but the judges wont allow it so they put a bunch of people in contempt. some fights break out between Giles Corey and putnam. Many is caught lying and si severely punished for doing so. they ask mary where she got the poppett and if she has any more.Proctor states Mary has nothing to gain by her deposition. That really doesnt make much of a difference though.

B) i was wondering why pariss hates John proctor so much, i was thinking it is because he doent go to church? i have no clue what is going on between those two.

C) I thought it was really funny how Giles corey got into a fight. he's so old i was cracking up. i really like this act most of all because it is finaly getting to the juicy stuff, the trials

A.) Picture it, the courtroom, 1692...The trial of Elizabeth Proctor. But all is not well when Giles Corey abrubtly interrupts the court and claims that the only reason Putnam is doing this to attain more land. The judges, and Deputry governor decide that they would like to get to the bottom of this matter. All starts going crazy, but eventually order is again restored, well at least to a degree.

B.) The only question I really have is why this is everyone else's business. They keep meddling in their friends lives only to have their own lives brought under the spotlight.

C.) To me, this whole situation just boggles my mind. Even including the fact about the red scare, and when the Japs were put away in America. It almost makes me laugh because we are so afraid of somethign we know nothing about that, we start panicing acting like some anarchist society and running around like heathen, personally the ones who run around are the ones who should be tried.

The main characters in this act are Giles, Putnam, Judge Hawthorn, Danforth, Parris, Francis, Procter, Mary Warren, Cheever, Martha, Rebecca, Abigail, and Herrick. In Salem the courts are in session and Giles interrupts the session by saying that Putnam is only in it for the land. Judge Danforth, Reverend Hale and Parris join Giles and Francis in the vestry room to get to the bottom of the topic. Mary swears that she and the other girls were only pretending to be bothered by witchcraft. Judge Danforth asks Proctor if he has told the village about Mary’s claims. Proctor promises him that he just wants to free his wife, but Cheever tells the judge that Proctor tore up the warrant for Elizabeth’s taking in for questioning. Danforth and Hawthorne tell Proctor that he need not worry about Elizabeth’s on the agenda execution because she says she’s pregnant and would n0t be hanged until after she set free her baby from her belly :). Danforth calls for Abigail and her friends. Abigail denies Mary’s statements and her explanation for the doll in the Proctor house. Proctor jumps at Abigail and calls her a whore. He confesses his affair with her and explains that Elizabeth fired her when she discovered it. He says that Abigail wants Elizabeth to hang so that she can be his wife. Major Quote: A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you—see her what she is . . . She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance . . .

B.I dont understand why would you through someone in jail because the girls say one thing abot another and she is found in jail. This shows me how holy and scared this puritan county of Salem is.

C.I feel bad for all the acused of which craft because they are all acused of something that is totally rediculous.
