The Crucible - Act Two Reading Notes

Please answer the following in your posts for Act Two of The Crucible:

A. Observation - Write who, what, where, when, why, and how for the historical context of each reading. (Remember, this should be your longest section.)
B. Interpretation - Write down your questions in regard to what the text means. You do not need to immediately find the answers to every question, but at least make note of them.
C. Application - You must have a personal opinion such as how the selected passages or question makes you feel, how it has meaning or lacks meaning, or why it is difficult to accept, etc.
Optional !!!D. Lists - Make a couple of lists in an attempt to clarify observations, characters, interpretations, and applications. Many times lists can alleviate confusion and further understanding.

Please remember that this post is worth 50 points and is due by 8:00a.m. on Friday morning, 9/22/06!

A) curtian up! ok so act 2 opens with John and Elizibeth Proctor argueing about all the trials and adultrous acts. later on Rev. Hale enters the scene, he is going around talking to all the good people of salem trying to see if they are up to witchcraft. When he gets to the Proctor's he talks with them and asks them to recite the Ten Commandments and John it seems like he has trouble saying the one about thall shalt not comitt adultry. also in this scene Mary The Proctor's servent brings Elizibeth a "Poppet" which is like a voodoo doll, from salem where she wasn't supposed to be. when Rev. Hale confiscated it he was very curious because a man felt a pain right where there was needle in the doll.

B)Why would they go by the words of a girl like abigail?
why was there a needle in the poppet?

C)I don't see why they arrested Elizibeth instead of Mary. Mary was the one who brought home the doll. Why did Mrs. Proctor get blaimed?

A.Observation

-The characters in Act II are John and Elizabeth Proctor, Warren, Giles, Francis, Abigail, Mary,Rebbecca, Parris, Martha, and Herrick.
-This act is about the town leaders placing the accused in jail.
-A week after the girls were dancing the Procter's,Elizabeth and Mary Warren is eating their dinner and they were telling Elizabeth to stay in the house.Proctor can not believe the people that were going nuts in the town and he tells Elizabeth that Abigail had sworn her dancing had nothing to do with witchcraft. When Mary Warren returns to the house from the courts she gives Elizabeth a doll that she sewed saying that it is a gift.Thirty-nine people now are accused of the witchcraft.Herrick went to the Procter house with a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest. While taking Elizabeth away John tried to fight them from taking his wife.

B.Interpretation
-Why are they arresting so many of the towns people when they don't have any evidence that they were involved with the witch craft?

C.Application
-This Act made me feel that the town was over reacting to this. The leaders of the town were arresting any person that they thought were involved and had no true sources that would tell them who were dancing and who wasn't. Unbelievable!

The main characters in this act are Giles, Putnam, Judge Hawthorn, Danforth, Parris, Francis, Procter, Mary Warren, Cheever, Martha, Rebecca, Abigail, and Herrick. In Salem the courts are in session and Giles interrupts the session by saying that Putnam is only in it for the land. Judge Danforth, Reverend Hale and Parris join Giles and Francis in the vestry room to get to the bottom of the topic. Mary swears that she and the other girls were only pretending to be bothered by witchcraft. Judge Danforth asks Proctor if he has told the village about Mary’s claims. Proctor promises him that he just wants to free his wife, but Cheever tells the judge that Proctor tore up the warrant for Elizabeth’s taking in for questioning. Danforth and Hawthorne tell Proctor that he need not worry about Elizabeth’s on the agenda execution because she says she’s pregnant and would n0t be hanged until after she set free her baby from her belly :). Danforth calls for Abigail and her friends. Abigail denies Mary’s statements and her explanation for the doll in the Proctor house. Proctor jumps at Abigail and calls her a whore. He confesses his affair with her and explains that Elizabeth fired her when she discovered it. He says that Abigail wants Elizabeth to hang so that she can be his wife. Major Quote: A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you—see her what she is . . . She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance . . .

B.I dont understand why would you through someone in jail and eventually hang some one over a small doll. This shows me how holy and scared this puritan county of Salem is.

C.I feel bad for all the acused of which craft because they are all acused of something that is totally rediculous.
