The Crucible - Act One Reading Notes

Please answer the following in your posts for Act One of The Crucible:
A. Observation - Write who, what, where, when, why, and how for the historical context of each reading.
(Remember, this should be your longest section.)

B. Interpretation - Write down your questions in regard to what the text means. You do not need to immediately find the answers to every question, but at least make note of them.

C. Application - You must have a personal opinion such as how the selected passages or question makes you feel, how it has meaning or lacks meaning, or why it is difficult to accept, etc.

D. Lists - Make a couple of lists in an attempt to clarify observations, characters, interpretations, and applications. Many times lists can alleviate confusion and further understanding.

Please remember that this post is worth 50 points and is due by 8:00a.m. on Monday morning, 9/18/06!

The Crucible is written about the Salem Witch Trials which took place in Salem,Massachusetts in 1692.The main characters are
Reverend Parris,Betty Parris,Reverend John Hale, Abigail Williams,Tituba,Elizabeth Proctor,Thomas Putnam, and Mrs. Putnam. The Play opens with reverend Parris praying over his daughter Betty Parris. She was found unconsidered after dancing with her friends and a slaved named Tibuta. The town physician Dr. Griggs is unable to determine sickens Betty, but suggests witchcraft.Mr. Parris has asked Abigail about what happened in the woods but he feels she is not telling the truth.Mr. and Mrs. Putnam call another family in Salem, and they agree that Bettys illness results from witchcraft.

I have several questions to the author,Why would a slave be dancing with the reverends daughter at night all alone? And Why not kill the people affected by the witchcraft before it had the whole town sick?

This Act made me feel weird because this book is supposed to be written by puritans and this writting is not to glorify God at all.

Dont have any list.

A) There are many main charactars one being Rev. Pariss, the others in his family, Betty Pariss, his niece Abigail Williams, the Pariss' slave girl Tituba, John Proctor and Ruth and Thomas Putnam. the setting is Salem Mass during the salem witch trials in 1692. the Author is Arthur Miller. The whole witch conspiracy starts when Rev. Pariss find his and alot of other girls dancing in the woods. the whole underlaying thing here was Tituba could supposedly speek to the dead so Ann wanted to talk to her 7 dead children through Tituba. One of the girls is Caught flying and the towns people see her doing so. so Rev. Pariss has a conspiricy thoery that these girls are witch's. the pariss daughter is very sick also so they think someone cast a spell on her because nobody can figure out what is wrong with her. for the most part this book is histocally accurate except for the fact that they didnt burn witches but hanged them rather.

B) a few things i dont get are on page 42 Abigail mentions lentails and beans in a Kettle where they were dancing. i dont know what lentials are. and on page 32 putnam says "I'll clap my whit on you. what does it mean. and i thought it was truly bazzar when the sick girl woke up and started screaming when some one said psalm.

C) Reading this first act at many points i felt chills runing down my spine. the vividness of this imagery is unreal. it is just a disturbing thing to think of when the girl is possesed. i barely made it through the book by myself, i went downstairs to be with my dad to read it. it freaked me out. i can see how it would lack meaning i really am not that fond if this book because it is scary. i am not much of a fanof scary movies either though.

D)
-The girls are found dancing in the woods brewing somthing in a kettle
-The Rev. sees them
- Girl seen flying
-girl is in a possesed coma
- the truth slowly unfolds
